Fifth grade Reading and Language consists of three main topic areas: Reading, Grammar, and Spelling. Students in fifth grade will use the Treasures curriculum.

English 9 involves all language arts.  Intense focus is placed on the writing process, as well as emphasizing and strengthening speaking and reading skills.  Students will work on grammar and usage, vocabulary, and other related skills to start the year off on the right foot.  Students will become familiar with the computer and the Internet, which is an important and essential way to start off their high school careers.

Communication skills are among the best indicators of success after graduation. English 10 is the place to sharpen those skills.  Each semester features a great novel like John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men or Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird.   Each semester also offers lots of opportunities to improve writing, speaking, thinking, and listening skills. The writing process is emphasized as students journal, write rough drafts, and use the word processor to produce a polished, final copy of each writing assignment. English 10 is required for graduation, and the skills it stresses are the prerequisites for life-long success in any field of endeavor.

The study of this quality literature is combined with intensive study of the writing process and of the elements of public speaking. The communication skills stressed in English 11 are the building blocks of future success, whether students choose to pursue a four-year degree or to join the work force immediately after high school.

One Semester Elective 11, 12

PREREQUISITE: "B" average in English & Teacher Recommendation/Approval

College professors indicate that the majority of students who enter college simply are not prepared for the amount and the level of writing required. This course prepares students for the demands of college writing — in any area of study. This course is intense and difficult, a true indicator of what a student who is serious about attending a four-year college can expect in the years to come.

Each student will develop a portfolio of papers typical of the kinds of writing he/she will encounter as a college freshman. Each student will also prepare and deliver speeches as a part of this course. College Prep English is a difficult class, and it is not for everyone. However, the extremely valuable communication skills students develop in this class are more than worth the hard work it demands.

NOTE:

Juniors who qualify may opt out of the 2nd semester of English 11 and take College Prep in its place.

This course focuses on the process of writing expressive and informative prose. It introduces research skills and critical thinking skills. Prerequisite: College Prep. English.

This course is a continuation of ENG-105 with advanced work in research techniques. The major focus is on persuasive and argumentative writing, incorporating oral, visual, and electronic modes with an emphasis on critical thinking skills. Prerequisite: ENG-105 with a grade "C" or better or equivalent.

Imagine switching places with someone else just for a few hours. How would life be different? Next, imagine you are a famous newspaper columnist or the person who writes speeches for the president of the United States. Continue to think of such scenarios leaving only your imagination to limit you. Creative Writing will be able to bring all of this to you … and MORE! The students will focus on the writing process by brainstorming possibilities, writing drafts, peer editing work, revising drafts, and sharing work with the rest of the class. Not only will the students be learning HOW to write, but they will also be challenged with the amazing capability of LIKING to write as well. Creative Writing will be a class that allows each student the opportunity to succeed, as long as each person is willing to take a chance. Just like everything else in this world, improvement in writing takes time and practice, but this skill is needed in today’s world. As Collin McCarty once wrote, “Increase the chances of reaching your goals by working at them gradually.”
